Because we spend so much time coordinating meetings, setting agendas, and implementing the day-to-day tasks, it’s easy to get bogged down in minutiae and petty issues. One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that effective leaders resist the temptation to get sidetracked down those dead-end roads.

They keep their eyes on the prize. And they avoid the unnecessary detours. I hope to be a good leader, to stay focused on what’s important, and to help the league maintain the proud heritage that it has produced. That heritage, 75 years, was created by women who kept their eyes on what is most important.

Behind every good president is a great team. We have major tasks at hand—Kids Bridge, Lighter East Restoration Project, and our fall fundraising gala, Night in Old Havana.

But WHY do we do these projects?

The whole purpose of Kids Bridge is to help children and parents deal with issues that feel much larger than them. We’ve all been there, but some don’t deal with them so well, and that’s why we invested in Kids Bridge.

Why did JSL restore the Lighthouse or a room at the Lightner Museum?

The city of St. Augustine is also a city of historic importance, a beacon for generations to come. When we forget our heritage, we lose our identity.

What is the purpose of the gala? It’s hard work and fun, but it’s our primary fundraiser. Let’s not lose sight of why we are doing these projects.

If I didn’t think these things were important to our community, I wouldn’t be president of the League. Like you, I have many other important things to do. But communities don’t work well unless the talents and resources of citizens are pooled together, around some cause that is more important than you or me. If the cause is worth doing, I will give you my best, and that you can count on.

JSL is a volunteer organization. As such, the president is not the boss. There’s no paycheck. People give because they want to. You usually can’t challenge the boss. And if you don’t do what the boss wants, you can be fired. Volunteer organizations don’t work that way. We’re here because we want to be, and most likely because others have asked us to be. That dynamic produces a unique set of circumstances and a unique challenge to presidents and board members. I only know one way to do it. We stay focused on what is important. Stay focused on worthy causes. That’s why we have 75 years under our belts. Feel proud to be a part of it.

God Bless,

Holly Uhland Itnyre, President 2010
