Imagine your grandmother’s attic. Multiply it by several dozen rooms. Throw in some organization. Now you have something of an idea of what lurks on the fourth floor of the Lightner Museum.
Join us for a rare opportunity to look at the smorgasboard of hidden treasures in the museum that director Bob Harper sometimes calls the “Florida Smithsonian.” Tours are led by Mr. Bob Harper and Mr. Barry Myers, museum curator. That fourth floor holds reminders of both the vastness of the collection and the days when the Lightner was known as Hotal Alcazar, opened in 1888 and one of Henry Flagler’s three impressive St. Augustine hotels.
The fundraiser by the Junior Service League of St. Augustine lets the public get a look at the rarely seen treasures of yesteryear and to catch sight of the progress of the League’s restoration project, Lightner East. Selected pieces, called Lightner Treasures, are available for legacy sponsorships. The treasures will be restored and the patron’s name displayed near or on the item. The piece will be permanently showcased within the museum.
Tour the Fourth Floor of Lightner Museum between 6 and 9 p.m., Thursday, October 14th.
Admission is $30 per person. The tour is limited to 100 guests. Café Alcazar is graciously catering light hors d'oeuvres. Wine is by Tim’s Wine Market.
Proceeds benefit the Lightner East Restoration Project by the Junior Service League of St. Augustine, Inc.
